Quick answer: Gateside by TSA PreCheck® is a new benefit that lets TSA PreCheck members apply to enter the secure side of participating airports without a plane ticket. |
Gateside by TSA PreCheck gives members a new way to access the terminal beyond airport security without a boarding pass. Once TSA PreCheck members who apply online for a planned visit are approved, they can accompany someone to a departure gate, welcome an arriving traveler, meet a friend during a layover, or enjoy airport restaurants and shops.
The program offers a controlled way to bring back an airport experience many people remember from years ago while maintaining TSA’s security requirements.
Does having an approved Gateside pass mean you can go through airport security without a plane ticket?
Yes, but only under certain circumstances.
Gateside by TSA PreCheck allows approved visitors without an airline ticket to pass through security at participating airports. Visitors must meet the program’s eligibility requirements, apply in advance and receive approval before arriving at the airport.
While Gateside passes provide access to eligible areas of the airport beyond the security checkpoint, it does not allow individuals to board an aircraft.
Who is eligible for a Gateside pass?
To apply for Gateside access, you must have a TSA PreCheck membership and a valid Known Traveler Number, commonly called a KTN.
People who receive TSA PreCheck benefits through another qualifying Trusted Traveler Program, such as Global Entry, may also be eligible to apply using their KTN or PASSID.
Children can accompany an approved parent or guardian, but they must be included on the adult’s Gateside pass application.
Is Gateside by TSA PreCheck free?
There is no additional fee to apply for a Gateside pass, but applicants must have an active TSA PreCheck membership.
Approval is not guaranteed. TSA and participating airports may limit the number of visitors based on airport capacity, anticipated passenger volume and other operational considerations.
How do you apply for Gateside by TSA PreCheck?
Members with an active KTN should apply through the official Gateside by TSA PreCheck page on TSA.gov 1 to 3 days before their planned airport visit.
The process generally includes these steps:
- Confirm that your airport participates in Gateside by TSA PreCheck.
- Sign in or create a login.gov account required to complete the application.
- Enter your Known Traveler Number and requested visit information.
- Add anyone else in your party including children who will accompany you. Adults added to your party must have their own KTN.
- Wait for TSA to approve your visit before going to the airport. Travelers will typically receive an approval decision shortly after submission.
If approved, bring an acceptable form of identification and your Gateside by TSA PreCheck approval to the airport.
Do Gateside visitors still go through airport security?
Yes. Gateside visitors must complete security screening before entering the secure area of the airport.
Approved visitors can proceed through a TSA PreCheck screening lane, but they must still follow TSA security requirements, including restrictions on liquids and prohibited items. Pack anything you bring to the airport as though you were preparing a carry-on bag for a flight.
